Why should we work at least 9 hours in the office?

The tryst with the future

It was the time of “Town Hall” in Accenture, where I was working on Oil and Gas Company based in France, that I summoned enough courage to ask a question to the Delivery Head of Accenture India. The question was “Is ten hours in the office a mandatory work hours, or can it be relaxed?”

And the answer I got lead to a new genre of thinking.

We, Indians, crib for a few hours stay in the office, but do no think how the global patterns of the job functions are changing. Some of us do not even know that we might be losing deals to Philippines, or South African Region or a different geography altogether that might lead us to think twice before raging this question. The question is not whether we have a recession or not in the world economic forum, the DNA of the people has to imbibe the policy of working at a stretch and with a better productivity. Just taking tea for long office hours does not help in getting a big bonus or project bonus, or it does not help in justifying the cause of NASSCOM, whose directions are vivid and clear. If we do not work hard, someone else will, and he will snatch the deal right under our nose, especially when one of our neighboring countries is so keen to take a dip in the global markets by focusing on learning English. And this is not just a wakeup call.

Read this article, and you will understand what is the reason to concentrate more on work, and work productivity. It is not just to help your clients with work, but to leave them gasping for a breath caused by overwhelming service as Bob Tusca suggests in “You will be satisfied”. That is what is required. If your competitor outsmarts you, then you should create your own flavor in the industry.

Yet, luckily in Accenture, I came to know that any decision that has to be made by global MNCs has to take India into account. In fact a lot of B-schools outside India ask you what is the plan for the BRIC countries after you graduate. The question is how long? Will the economy be sustainable enough to create jobs in the longer run and yet compete with the global world? That is what we have to see.

The last question is, Can the Indian Government look towards a good policy of foreign investments in India that will help people make them a distinct professional towards an industry? Or, can India afford to nurture growth among young and budding entrepreneurs and make it a hub of new ideas? If somehow, everyone can nurture ideas that can affect the common cause, then it will be a distinct paradigm shift. But for that, everyone has to contribute. Our basic education system should change its contents to guide young students for a better tomorrow with an all-round development meant in the schools, not prepare them as engineers or doctors. Or, develop them when he is graduating from a college. Public or Private school, it does not matter, what matters is the intrinsic value that is imbibed in the teachings that lets the students to think on issues, causes, effects, and analysis as a whole. Of India, of the world.

It was a thoughtful move by the Indian Government recently to create human DNA among the doctors, by making it a rule of a year of internship in remote villages in India that would certainly help the poor people in terms of medical benefits. That is imbibing the human DNA, in the heart of the doctors. Rightfully mentioned that the “Fortune lies at the bottom of the pyramid” and this seems to be a good moral lift for the patients.

It is not just surviving, but surviving with awe for ourselves, not just in differentiating us, but also for the good of the world- our world of India. And the future is already here.
