Attitude or Aptitude

What is the most important factor for success? Is it aptitude or attitude? Can attitude be taught, or can aptitude be enhanced?

Cognitive Sciences realize that that the kids around 6-16 have the maximum learning capacity in this period of time. As educationists, we just have to pursue that logic.

Emotions and behavioural patterns as a child work towards his growth in personality. There are standard psychometric assessments that gauge some parameters of growth. If these standardized tests are extended, imagine what can happen.

Assessments would lead to results that would help us to decide who needs what? Which are the parameters that require improvement, which parameters require a simple brush, which parameters are extra-ordinary and so on! This tests can encompass professionals from various fields- lawyers, doctors, business executives, sportsmen, students and even children.

Let us take an example. If we create a few parameters on learning and then segregate the students based on some of the parameters which are homogenous in nature, then from the age group 6-10 we get a group that are inclined to certain patterns of learning. Then after 10-14, we allow heterogeneity so that the peer learning takes place, and then at last 14-16 we have interdisciplinary learning.

Coming back, the type of subjects to be taught at tender level – accountancy, economics, vedic maths, history and English grammer, can have immense impact in the growth of a child. More importantly, it is the way of delivery or delivery mechanism that stands apart from the rest. Homogeneous groups can be segregated based on the best impact on the learning- is it audio, is it visual, is it audio-visual, is it pedagogical, or experiential learning? Let us say, how can we spin a yarn while teaching the difference between need and want: can we say- “Hi Hriju, do you like ice-creams? If yes, which flavour would you like to take today? Would you like to take it even now, when your stomach is full of a meal?”. Such can be the method of breaking the ice!

Coming back to the psychological assessments, we can test this for a kid to find his best assessment on the inclination for the subject, or the field of study. Any aberration can be controlled at earlier stages as well, and we can totally look into the child’s future from here. With proper mentoring, a child will rise to the occasion where the gene pool gets advanced. Maybe, we are looking into the future of the advancement of our people!
